Three wineries produce classic wines from European vinifera grapes and French-American hybrid grapes, as well as sweeter wines crafted from grapes native to North Carolina. Our wine region, known as the Crest of the Blue Ridge, was named an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in the summer of 2019. This prestigious federal designation recognizes Henderson County as a bona fide wine region worthy of a visit. Henderson County earned the AVA designation with its distinctive soil, climate and elevation. Warm days and cool mountain nights during the growing season, along with the right soil and water quality, provide favorable conditions for grape production in and around Hendersonville. The first winery to open in the county was Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards in 2012, followed by Burntshirt Vineyards in 2013, Point Lookout Vineyards in 2018. Burntshirt Vineyards typically produces 15-20 wines each season. The wines range from classic dry varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and a Dry Rosé to sweeter wines such as Riesling, Vidal Blanc and port. Burntshirt also pays homage to Hendersonville apple country with an apple wine. Burntshirt’s facilities include a tasting room with two tasting bars, an outdoor patio and gazebo for tastings and live music, a food truck, and an events center for weddings and celebrations. Burntshirt operates a second tasting room near Chimney Rock. Point Lookout Vineyards is located atop a 3,000-foot mountain with 270-degree panoramic views of the Blue Ridge from its well-appointed open-air tasting room. The vineyards cascade down the mountain from the tasting room on land that was once an apple orchard. Point Lookout’s 11 wines include six reds, four whites and a rosé, with such varietals as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Riesling, Dry Riesling and two types of Chardonnay. Point Lookout’s impressive tasting room, made from redwood timbers harvested in Canada, is an ideal place for individual visits, groups and celebrations. There is a regular offering of live music and food trucks, and the facility can accommodate weddings/events up to 300 people. Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards Henderson County’s first winery operates a vineyard and tasting room at an elevation of 2,300 feet, with a second vineyard at nearly 3,000 feet in elevation. The winery features both indoor and outdoor tasting areas, along with a regular schedule of live music and other events. From 14 varietals of grapes, Saint Paul produces a range of wines including Riesling blends, Cabernets and Chardonnays, each with dry and semi-sweet versions. Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards has two other venues aside from the main winery. It operates Appalachian Ridge Artisan Ciders in a renovated 1940s barn surrounded by apple trees, as well as a state-of-the-art tasting room and event venue in nearby Flat Rock.
